Porto. reached out with a concrete goal - revamp their existing news portal. Being Porto a city and a brand known worldwide, Pixelmatters had to build a distinctive news portal.
The challenge was to craft a distinct visual language for Porto.pt, one that felt connected to the brand without blending into it. The design needed to reflect editorial credibility, not institutional messaging. We focused on improving back office usability, enhancing overall UX and performance.
Brand balance
A distinct visual identity that respect - but doesn’t replicate - the Porto. brand.
UX Overhaul
UX audit-led refinements for a more intuitive experience, tailored for a wide audience.
Transition to mobile app
A native app designed to expand reach, boost engagement, and ensure accessibility on the go.
Dev-Ready design
Tight collaboration with front-end teams to ensure accurate, scalable implementation.
The overhaul started with a complete teardown of the previous interface, which suffered from poor usability, unclear hierarchy, and fragmented navigation.
We rebuilt the experience from the ground up - crafting wireframes that prioritized clarity, discoverability, and accessibility - turning complexity into simplicity without sacrificing depth.
The design system created for Porto.pt was one of the most complete and robust we’ve delivered - built with scalability, accessibility, and editorial flexibility at its core. Every component was crafted to support a modular structure, adaptable to the dynamic needs of the platform.
Design for scalability
Cross-platform consistent
Faster implementation
Unified visual language
This thoughtful foundation made it possible to efficiently repurpose key elements for the mobile app, saving time while maintaining consistency. The result was a cohesive, cross-platform experience that delivered both speed and design integrity.
Porto.pt is now more than a news outlet—it’s a flexible, future-ready platform that empowers its team and connects more meaningfully with its audience. Through strategic design, collaboration, and bold decisions, the project reshaped how a city communicates in the digital age.
